Abstract

The research seeks to analyze political-sexual violence against women within the phenomenon called social protest, in order to demonstrate, first of all, that sexual violence has been used as a repressive political tool by Latin American governments; and, secondly, demonstrate that democratic and de facto governments use sexual violence in a transversal manner, this being a widespread and systematic practice within the continent.

The analysis adopted a historical gender perspective, allowing that sex-gender relations influence the nature of political violence in Latin America; That is, culturally assigned gender differences play a determining role in the methods used as a form of torture on women.

The investigation was based on the events that occurred during the military dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990) and the social outbreak in the same country (2019).
