For those who work in adoption processes, it has always been a great challenge to comply with the principle of inseparability of siblings, contained in the Adoption Law No. 19.620, currently in force in Chile. This implies that all actions must be taken to avoid separating groups of siblings and placing them for adoption in the same family system. However, such compliance is not only subject to the existence of adopters willing to receive older children (as they usually are) and sibling groups, but also to the existence of family systems that have the characteristics, competencies, and conditions for the exercise of complex and high-demand parenting. This article proposes a model for approaching the principle of inseparability of siblings, especially when the possibility of separating them into different adoptive families must be analysed, bearing in mind the devastating effects of complex trauma and institutionalisation, which many children have experienced in their life trajectories.
